Part 1… Cleaning Your Carpets The average carpet can catch and hold the equivalent of its own weight in dirt and grime. According to studies, 79 percent of these soils are dry. This suggests that proper daily vacuuming can and should clean 79 percent of all carpets. Vacuuming alone will not produce wonderfully clean carpets. Because foot traffic forces soils deep into the carpet’s surface, much of the dirt is out of reach for vacuum suction alone or a brush with no vacuum at all. The same foot traffic grinds away at the dirt and grit as the carpet pile fills up with this packed soil. This grit cuts the carpet fibres like sandpaper and causes the carpet to wear out prematurely. One grain of sand contains 36 cutting edges. Any professional operation will use a hoover with a brushing action on a daily basis to remove the majority of these soils near the surface, preventing them from being impacted into the carpet pile.
